February's Brown Gerygone
February's Brown Gerygone
Rosie Lewis
At first glance, what appears to be a tangled mass of dried grass, is actually the masterful nest-building artistry of the Brown Gerygone. Fluttering between twisted vines and dense canopy foliage in coastal rainforests of Eastern Australia, these sprightly olive-brown birds carefully construct their beautiful hanging nests, shaded from February’s harsh summer sun. These dome nests are intricately crafted of dried roots, grasses and vines and carefully decorated with lichens and moss.
