Michelle Possum Nungurrayi is a highly respected Anmatyerre artist from Central Australia, born in 1970 near Mt Allan (Yuelamu), northwest of Alice Springs. She is the daughter of the late Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, one of the most influential figures in the Australian Aboriginal art movement, and she learned to paint by assisting him from a young age. Michelle’s work carries forward her father’s legacy while expressing her own artistic voice, blending traditional Dreaming stories with contemporary composition and colour. Her paintings often depict intricate maps of her ancestral country, showing Grandmother’s Country, Women’s Ceremonies, Bush Tucker, and Travelling Dreamings through the use of dots, tracks, and concentric circles. Each element in her work represents people, places, and ancestral journeys, offering both visual beauty and deep cultural meaning. Michelle’s art has been exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, and she is celebrated for preserving her family’s stories while innovating within the Aboriginal art tradition.
