Honey Possum and Showy Banksia
Honey Possum and Showy Banksia
Rosie Lewis
With the onset of dusk across South Western Australia, and the quietening of the evening, the Honey Possum emerges from its nest in search of food. A brilliant Showy Banksia bush is discovered, and the possum commences its upwards journey, scampering between scissor sharp leaves, to reach the sturdy green cones, containing clusters of tiny nectar-filled flowers. The honey possum’s highly specialised tongue allows it to retrieve nectar from deep within each flower, and in doing so, collect and transport pollen from flowers, allowing the banksia to reproduce. This miraculous process is known as pollination and is essential for life on our Earth.
