Little Wattlebird and Red Flowering Gum
Rosie Lewis
The Flowering Gum, with red blossoms brilliant against the green of its eucalypt leaves, are found in forests along the coast of South Western Australia, and in suburban backyards across the country. Little Wattlebirds gather in its branches, feeding on the nectar-rich flowers that the tree offers. Amongst the commotion, birds are showered with pollen, and in return for their feast, carry this pollen to neighbouring trees, spreading the gum’s genes through its community. This miraculous process is known as pollination and is essential for life on our Earth.
