Bob Gibson Tjungurrayi is an Indigenous Australian artist associated with the Papunya Tula movement and the Western Desert painting tradition. Born in the Western Desert region of Western Australia around 1930, he lived a traditional nomadic lifestyle before moving into government settlements such as Papunya, where he became involved in the early development of contemporary Indigenous acrylic painting. His work is deeply connected to ancestral Dreaming stories, particularly Tingari cycles, which relate to sacred journeys, sites, and ceremonies across his country. Using finely controlled dotting, linear patterning, and strong geometric structure, Tjungurrayi’s paintings convey both cultural knowledge and spiritual significance. His work has been exhibited widely and is recognised for its important contribution to the preservation and expression of Western Desert art and culture.
